Sacagawea dollar values present a striking paradox in modern American coinage—while over a billion of these golden-colored coins were minted starting in 2000, most remain stubbornly worth just their $1 face value, with only a handful of errors and varieties commanding prices up to $204,000.
Designed by Glenna Goodacre, the coin features Sacagawea, the young Shoshone woman who guided Lewis and Clark’s expedition, carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back—making her the first Native American woman depicted on regular U.S. circulating coinage.
Despite heavy marketing campaigns including partnerships with Walmart and Cheerios cereal, these manganese brass coins (containing no actual gold) suffered the same fate as their Susan B. Anthony predecessors, failing to gain acceptance in everyday commerce.
The Mint’s grand ambitions resulted in such massive overproduction that by 2009, government vaults held 857 million unwanted dollar coins—enough to satisfy demand for twelve years without striking another coin.

Summary: Sacagawea dollar value
Sacagawea dollar values remain overwhelmingly at face value, with standard circulation strikes from 2000-2008 and Native American reverse designs from 2009 onward worth only $1 each regardless of condition.
The series’ few valuable exceptions include the legendary 2000-P “Cheerios Dollar” with enhanced eagle tail feathers distributed in cereal boxes, worth $3,000-5,000; the extremely rare Washington quarter mule errors with 18 known selling for $144,000; and the unique South Carolina quarter mule that brought $66,000.
Other collectible varieties include the 2000-P “Wounded Eagle” with a die gouge creating a raised line across the eagle’s breast, and the 5,000 Goodacre presentation pieces with special satin finish. Edge lettering errors, missing edge inscriptions, and position variations (A and B) on later dates add minor premiums.
While the series transitioned to annually changing Native American reverse designs in 2009, these too failed to circulate and are worth face value. Despite Sacagawea’s historic significance and the coin’s attractive design, massive mintages and public rejection ensure that 99.99% of these “golden dollars” will never be worth more than one dollar, making them a cautionary tale about forcing unwanted denominations on an uninterested public.
